Agadir is a major city and port in Morocco. It is also a popular tourist destination with ideal winter temperatures. Although this region has been inhabited since the early twelfth century, the current city is very new. On February 29, 1960 a 5.8 magnitude earthquake did extensive damage to the city killing twelve to fifteen thousand and injuring twelve thousand more. Ninety percent of the city was destroyed. So the current city is about 60 years old and build to withstand earthquakes.

Since the city is new, it has a new identity with the world in addition to rebuilding to remember some of its ancient culture. Catering to tourism, one developer has bought two used commercial aircraft from two separate airline companies and repurposed them as a restaurant and a café. They sit high on the hill overlooking the ocean.

The bus tour began at the dock before nine and drove along the coast to the mosque of Mohamed 5.

Next stop was the famous Al Had Souk, the largest shopping market in the area. It is called the Big Market or the Sunday Market even though it is open during the week as well. It is closed on Monday for cleaning. The market has about six thousand shops surrounded by a six metre high wall (20 feet). It covers over 13 hectares (32 acres) and has twelve gates to enter the souk.

Here are some pictures of what you will see inside. It was early so some of the shops were not open yet.

The videos will show it better.
