Avila, Spain
On the bus ride from Madrid to Salamanca, we stopped at the side of the road to buy some yemas and take pictures of the walled city of Avila and the pilgrimage spot known as Los Cuatro Postes.
Avila is located in the central plain on the east bank of the Adaja River and north of the Sierra de Gredos mountains
Los Cuatro Postes (four posts) is a shrine on the side of the road about one and a half kilometers outside of the walled city, on the west side of the river.
In the picture below a small foot-bridge is visible on the left. This connects the shrine with the walled city.
At some point not everything will fit within the walls like the new conference center and the Catholic University of Avila.
Avila is the home of Santa Teresa, a nun of the 16th century, who reformed the Carmelite Order and other convents in the region.
This community is also famous for the sweet yemas of Santa Teresa. Only available here from the nuns of this convent and only from their special secret recipe. Imitations are available from other places using an unlicensed recipe.
