Botanical Garden of Tenerife

From the port the island looks like a barren piece of volcanic rock. However, when the bus took us up to the top of the hill, the picture changed to a lush green garden.

The star of this botanical garden is the giant Ficus tree that was brought from a small island, Lord Howe island, in the Tasmanian sea between Australia and New Zealand to this island in the Atlantic Ocean in 1870 by Herman Wildpret.

There are other trees and plants as well.

Don’t lean against this one.

The Moraceae plant species comes from India and Malaysia. It includes varieties like the Jack fruit, Breadfruit, Mulberry and Fig.

All of this in the middle of town with shops just across the road from the main gate.
