Cairns is one of the ports that provides tours to the Great Barrier Reef. It is a growing city on the eastern coast of Australia. This was our only stop between Sydney and Darwin. Since we had been here a couple of times before, we used this stop to shop for a few things we did not pack in our luggage.
There is nothing like decorating the blank side of a building to recognize a community leader.
A mural of Henrietta Marie painted by Claire Foxton for the Seawalls Cairns project. Henrietta Marie, born near Cairns, is a champion of Australian indigenous rights, a published author, professor, a member of the Order of Australia, and was appointed to a full-time professional position in the United Nations Secretariat for the Convention on Biological Diversity.
For your visit to the Great Barrier Reef, you can go out by catamaran and swim over the reef from an anchored platform, or you could fly over it in a helicopter.
You may want to organize your next convention in Cairns. They have a modern building to host your event. It is a short walk from the city center.
Before we sail away back out to sea along Chinaman Creek, I thought you might like another look at the city before we stop again in Darwin.
