Case Woodlot

I visited a forested area near home that I have driven by for as many years as I have lived in this town. It has a history of family ownership and then donation to the town to be kept as an undeveloped space.

When anyone drives by on the busy road that serves as a major artery for traffic into and out of the town, they may get a glimpse of a pond. There is no parking lot. If people want to walk through this quiet spot they have to park on the side of the road or walk in from the residential neighbourhood.

Unlike the other trails in the town, there are no cleared trails in this woodlot. The next time I visit, I will wear a hat. I heard popping sounds and tried to see what was making that noise. And like Newton becoming aware of gravity, I realized the sound was made by acorns falling to the forest floor. In some places the ground was covered with so many acorns that is was almost like waking on marbles. Fortunately I was not hit by any but when one fell just behind me, I stopped and looked around to see what had fallen out of my pocket.

Although the trails are not “maintained”, there are markers on some of the trees to indicate where to go.

It was my first visit and I will be going back again to take more pictures.

  1. What a delightful way to start my day; with a walk in “your” woods! How lucky you are to have that generous bit of “wild” so close. Falling acorns! Thank you!

  2. Sometimes natural beauty is right in our own town. Our town has an area that was owned by family for years and years. It was recently put up for sale to turn into a housing development. The city and community residents worked hard to keep it a forever wild and with the support of many, it happened. Only a small corner was sold so we have a nature area that now belongs to the city forever.

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
