Moving through the Columbia River Gorge
There are many interesting things to see around the Columbia River Gorge. In addition to the river there are mountains, waterfalls, power dams and fish ladders.
Mount Saint Helens is at the top, and Mount Hood is at the bottom right corner. The red marker is at Multnomah Falls location. If you trace a line from one mountain to the other the line will cross the Columbia River near Stevenson and Cascade Locks. Conveniently this is where the Bridge of the Gods is located and also the power generating stations, dams and lock systems.
Boat traffic moves along the lower edge of the river on the Oregon side. The locks allowing them to rise from the 6 meter elevation on the left to the 24 meter elevation on the right are on the side of Robins Island. The salmon use the fish ladder on the top right of the picture.
Here is a little closer look at the channel for fish traffic. We stopped at the viewing station and took a few pictures. It is in Washington State. Multnomah Falls is on the Oregon side of the River. Fortunately the Bridge of the Gods is near by and gives a nice view of the river. Here is the link to a YouTube video and a couple of still shots from the bridge.
The fish ladders are interesting. There are rest spots. We didn’t see many fish when we were there.
I’ll leave you with a short video of the falls.
