Devil’s Island in Papillon movies
There have been two movies made about the book Papillon. It tells the story of Henri Charriere who was convicted of murder in France and imprisoned on Devil’s Island, French Guiana. He escaped a couple of times and was recaptured. At the end of his time served, he wrote a book about his experience. The French government claims he was not a prisoner on Devil’s Island and others claim he was.
The book was published in 1969 and the movie, Papillon, was released in 1973 starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. (It was not filmed on Devils Island.) The second movie was released in 2017 and starred Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek.
Devil’s Island is one of the three islands that make up the Salut island group. Royal Island and Saint Joseph Island are the other two in the group. They are governed from French Guiana’s capital city, Cayenne, which is 30 miles (50 km.) away on the mainland of South America
