Dubrovnik is a major city of Croatia because of its sheltered port and recently it has become a favourite vacation spot. Since its founding in the seventh century, there have been many countries taking control over its government. As recently as 1991, when Croatia sought independence, they were shelled by the Serb backed Yugoslavian army. When we visited in 2012 repairs were still being made to the rooves of some buildings.
The city is a strategic hub of trade between East, West, North and South. Whenever a neighbouring nation starts to grow in power and expand its territory, this is a favourite target.
The building above has been chipped and marred by shells from the 1991 war, as has the wall below showing the lead infused into the stone.
Enough about war, let’s talk about why this is a popular vacation spot. First, it is a beautiful spot, nestled up against the high hills. There is a character to the old city streets and historic buildings. And of course, there is the Mediterranean weather. Our ship did not stay long but we did take a walk through the town and a bus tour to the south for a better view. The map below shows the sheltered harbours and where I took pictures with my cell phone. Ten at the dock and two from the bus.
These two pictures are from the high ground looking north along the coast to the city.
Also from the high ground is a look at Lokrum Island. More about that in another post.
It’s beautiful (and I learned a new word: rooves!). Thank you for sharing these amazing pictures.
My pleasure Dr. Renee. Thanks for the comment. Yes English is a strange language. The plural of goose is geese, but the plural of moose is not meese. 🙂
