Fortaleza church

Fortaleza Cathedral

What city tour is complete without a visit to a prominent church? If the church is a Roman Catholic Cathedral and is among the largest in the country, it may be worth a visit. There is a surprise here because it is not as old as it looks. The blackened surface is caused by the effect of the humid climate on the concrete.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza is built in the Roman and Gothic styles. It looks very old but was dedicated in 1978and was built in only 40 years. It accommodates 5,000 people and is the third-largest cathedral in all of Brazil.

Inside it appears more modern and clean and bright.

The front of the worship space and the long altar.

A lot of attention has been put into the details of the many stained glass windows. A few are shown in the pictures below.

On the sides of the main worship space, there are separate chapels for special small ceremonies.

Nossa Senhora da Assunção

We visited on the Wednesday before Good Friday when the Catholic Church remembers the crucifixion of Jesus. A special display was set up for this occasion.
