Port Victoria’s Botanical Garden
One plant is believed to grow only in the Seychelles and specifically two islands, Praslin and Curieuse. It is the CoCo de Mer and has many other unique properties. It has the largest seed of all plants weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). The flower of the female tree has no petals but is the largest flower of the palm tree species. Unlike other palms, it has a male and female tree with different flowers. It has the scientific name Lodoicea maldivica. The plant is being re-introduced to some of the neighbouring islands.
Another feature of the botanical garden is the giant tortoises that are found in the islands of this part of the world.
All of the plants require water. There are several water reservoirs in the garden. The one below seems to be overflowing, but it did rain for part of the time we were there.
One section of the garden is called an Oriental garden. Here are some of the structures in this area.
There are several important buildings near the garden.
While the flying foxes (bats) spend the day sleeping in the trees, we return to the ship to sleep at night while we travel on to our next port.
