In the fall when many plants are turning brown and preparing for winter, some plants thrive in the cooler temperatures, ideal moisture and light conditions and all of the available food from the rotting debris.
What are we looking at? Well, I am not an expert but at first glance, I would say it is moss. However, it could be a lichen. Moss is classified as a plant but lichens are a fungus. Sticking with moss, there are about 12,000 species. They are one of the first land plants and they have managed to spread all over the world, including Antarctica. They do not require lush environments like this, they can be found growing on rocks, brick walls, and even in cracks of concrete sidewalks.
Sometimes it is best to stop and look around at what is around you and to look back at where you came from.

Beautiful images. I’m not sure if I could recognize a moss from a lichen, however. The picture left me scratching my head. Beautiful forest pictures! The forest is truly my happy place.
I often do some research while writing my posts. This time I was not able to quickly find the ways to identify the differences from the lichens of an earlier post.
I think your email address says a lot about your happy place.
Doug, I love nature and your post has taught me some things to look at and take it all in. I usually just glance at the moss or what I thought might have been moss!! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Deb. I seem to notice more when I am carrying a camera. Even when it is a phone camera.
