Kagoshima

Located in Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima is the capital and largest of several cities. The prefecture has a population of almost 1.6 million. Looking around the port area it is hard to believe there are that many people here, but a satellite view by Google shows many large densely packed communities and a lot of farming space. These farms are famous for growing small oranges and huge white radishes.

While the morning exercise class was happening on the pool deck, I was taking pictures of the first stop on the cruise. Here is a video that pans around the docked side of the ship.

The excursion to the volcano requires a ferry ride across the bay. The view from the ferry terminal is a little closer to the action, not fifteen decks above the water. I think you will find this video interesting.

On one of the bus rides to the sites on our excursion I snapped a couple of pictures of an interesting building. This is the organization that teaches about volcanic activity and erosion control.

Here are a few more pictures as we cruise out of Kagoshima Bay away from the sunset.

  1. Were the large radishes called Daikons? I love those! My cousin was a missionary in Japan for 40 years. He seemed to take on the Japanese culture into his entire psyche. Even though he’s been back to the states over 20 years, Japan is still in his heart.

  2. Doug, your photos are always breathtaking. However, the videos didn’t work. I was in Japan with my email group in 2004 or thereabouts. Our Japanese members hosted and took us around several cities. I’m not familiar with this port. Thanks for the tour.

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
