Kristiansand is a sheltered port in the southeast part of Norway. The land here is not as mountainous as farther north and the islands that are sheltering the harbour have been built up with cottages that were once fishermen’s homes. Now they are summer vacation homes for others who work in the city. The pride the new owners have in their vacation property is evident.
We transferred from the Island Princess to the Maarten for our tour around the islands. Notice the reflection of the Island Princess in the mirrored glass windows of the building. You can also see the reflection of the boat we were boarding.
We left the industrial part of Kristiansand and headed for the islands.
I think a video will give you a better feel for the experience. Remember if you hover over the video you can watch it in full-screen mode and change the speed you watch it at.
On the way out, I recorded a couple of swans but it wasn’t until the return trip that I was ready with a camera to take some closeups of another pair..
I moved down to the stern for a different viewpoint. I hope you do not mind riding backwards.
The scenery on the port side is better than nice.
The tour had to turn around and head back to the port. I recorded this part looking forward but not realizing this would be the most enjoyable excursion of the vacation. It reminds me of growing up in a similar setting in central Canada.
Another breathtaking tour Doug! I love this island tour!!
Hi Martha, For me, this was the highlight of the whole vacation.
My mother was born and raised in Norway, and it’s so beautiful. Looking at your photos and video, I understand why people want to own vacation homes in Kristiansand. It seems like a really special place.
Did you spend much time in town, or was it primarily a boat tour?
Hi Paul, It was another half day excursion including the cruise around the islands, a bus ride to Lillesand for a 50 minute look around, then a buss ride back to the port. Only saw the town from the upper deck of the ship.
Another beautiful tour via your blog Doug…Norway is so very beautiful indeed
They are very focused on caring for the environment.
