La Geria Winery in Lanzarote

In the volcanic soil of the Canary Islands an unorthodox method of growing grapes has been developed. A funnel shaped space is dug into the ground to direct the moisture towards the roots of the grapes. Porous volcanic granules are put on top to act like a mulch to help retain the moisture. Each funnel shaped space is surrounded by volcanic rocks to block the wind from blowing everything away.

They grow melvasia grapes here. Remember that the flavour of the grape is influenced by the character of the soil it grows in, its “terroir”.

We were treated to a few samples of the local wine from the Geria Bodega.

These also grow here, but they are not grapes. Watch the next video to see if you can spot this plant.

  1. I loved the video = that’s a lot of grapes. Living here in PA surrounded by vineyards, it is quite a vision to see this. The question is how is the wine? I do like California and Chilean wines. How do these compare?

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
