Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

On this cruise there was only one day at sea. It was yesterday while we travelled from Malaga, Spain out into the Atlantic and south to the Canary Islands. We spent three days in the Canary Islands, one day at each of the larger islands. This is a preview of what we saw on the first port of call, Las Palmas. There were a few stops along the north coast of the island.

The cruise ships were tied up to both sides of a very long narrow pier. The pier was divided into three zones, one on each side for ship loading and unloading. The middle one was for vehicle traffic like trucks containing supplies.

After walking to the tour bus, we were soon on our way across the north of the island to see a cemetery that was in the midst of a three thousand year old lave flow.

It is just up the hill from the town of Agaete. It is a significant archaeological site and deserves a separate post. Here are a couple of models from the visitor centre.

It is also an interesting close up look at the lava. Finally we stop at a lovely port of Las Nieves where everyone is enjoying the warm sunset by the water of the Atlantic Ocean.

I can sum that up with a brief video.

It was an interesting day and it was dark by the time we were bussed back to the ship at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

  1. Looks like you had a wonderful first impression of the Canaries – will you come back for more one day?
Living in Europa, the Canary Islands are a popular location to escape winter for a week or two. People go there in November and enjoy the fact that there’s no fog, but plenty of sunshine! My favorite island is Teneriffa, mostly for the Teide, which is a dormant volcano and at 3,718 meters, the highest peak in Spain.

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
