Lisbon’s most famous Monuments

Earlier post here have already displayed some of the most famous Monuments of Lisbon, Portugal. Remember the 25 April Bridge, the Santa Apolonia and Rossio Stations, the lift and the funicular, and the Jeronimos Monastery. This post will highlight a few more. Built on a hilltop overlooking the city is this ancient fortress from the second century BC. Now it is more for show than for protection.

Below, the Lisbon Cathedral blends into the rest of the city buildings. You would not notice it unless you were standing right in front of it. It is the dirty brown flattop building on the left with the appearance of a fort. These pictures were taken from the ship out in the river.

In the picture of the skyline of Lisbon, The fort is in the top left corner and the cathedral is a little to the right of the center of the picture. Off to the right, is the monastery of Sao Vicente de Fora.

Farther to the right, shown in the picture below is the dome of the Church of Santa Engracia, and the newest cruise ship (2024) Queen Anne of the Cunard line. She is not one of the monuments and you will be lucky to find her here since she showed up at several of the ports of our cruise.

You may be noticing that there are a lot of churches in Portugal.

Now for something a little brighter, like the the Belem Palace, the residence of the President of the Portuguese Republic. Locals affectionately refer to it as the “Barbie Palace”, guess why.

Don’t let the picture of the entrance fool you, There is a grand courtyard and garden behind the walls that stretch along the entire block. Watch the video of the drive-by. (change the speed and display size with the control buttons in the bottom right.)

There are a couple more monuments that I could include here but I will save them for the next post on statues.
