After leaving the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia at the top of Mount Pellegrino, the bus brought us back down to the centre of Palermo. One of the memorable stops was at the Piazza Giuseppe Verdi.
In the centre of the Piazza is the largest opera house in Italy, putting it among the largest in the Europe. Designed in 1874 to host 3000 people, current safety legislation limits attendance to less than 1400.
The square is named after Giuseppe Verdi, an Italian composer of operas. The opera house has its fame from the renowned artists that have performed here like Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti. If you are not a follower of opera, you can get a peak at the Theatre in the movie “The Godfather III”.
The sculptures guarding the entrance to the theatre are worth a closer look. The characters on the backs of the lions are artistic performers, not warriors.
From here we got back on the bus to see more of the city of Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
