I am going back in my photo archives to find pictures of places I have visited but not blogged about yet. Here are a few pictures from the last visit I made to Niagara Falls.
It is only about a two-hour drive from home, but I have only been there a handful of times. This trip was to show a guest we had visiting from England a well known tourist feature of Ontario Canada.
The Niagara River divides around Goat Island at the top of the falls and creates two major cascades over the Niagara Escarpment. The river marks the border between Canada and the United States. One of the cascades is in the United States, and the Horseshoe Falls is in Canada. Here is a satellite view thanks to Google Earth.
There is a popular boat excursion that travels up to the base of the falls in the lower part of the river. Everyone on the boat wears a plastic rain poncho to keep dry from the tremendous mist generated by the falling water. The sound is so thunderous that you can feel it in your stomach. It is so loud you cannot have a conversation without shouting about a foot apart.
Have you ever visited this wonder of the world?
I live very close to Niagara Falls and have seen it in all seasons. It is quite amazing to see in the winter, when ice is swirling in the rapids. Three Sisters Island is the closest you can get to the rapids. It is an amazing sight to see the swirling, rushing water so close. In other seasons, it’s a great place for bird watching. Different types of gulls and ducks, such as the canvasback duck and the emperor gull, can be seen in the waters there, as well elsewhere in the Niagara River.
The last time I visited Niagara Falls was when my son was about 12. That’s 18 years ago. We used to visit every other year for a long time… But, I no longer have my client in Toronto, so my visits are fewer and far between.
It has probably changed a bit since you saw it last.
What memories! We lived near Saratoga NY and hit the thruway many times to visit the falls. They were always so beautiful. Love your pictures to bring back wonderful memories.
We used to live in upstate NY and often took visitors to Niagara Falls. Now that I live clear across the country, I dream of taking my kids there someday. I remember the Maid of the Mist and taking pictures of someone holding onto someone going over the edge in a barrel!
It’s a beautiful place.
Thanks the trip down memory lane. 🙂
I love waterfalls, and Niagra is one on my bucket list to see. Thank you for sharing your experience of it.
