Ocana, Corsica

Located in the Prunelli Gorge of Corsica, France is a village of about 600 people and growing. Built on the side of the mountain, with beautiful views over the valley, it is no wonder the population is increasing. (Wikipedia calls it a “commune”.) It is 22 kilometres northeast of Ajaccio the capital of Corsica. They have a website and a FaceBook page for up to date information on activities in the community. The town has an authentic ancient feel because most of the buildings are built of stone.

The tour bus stopped near the top of town for refreshments at the Pizza cafe called “Le Soccer”.

In 1944 there was a landslide that destroyed some of the homes. The landslide was caused by a couple of factors. Trees from the forests around the town were being removed and German Forces were dropping incendiary bombs. The second factor was a major storm that saturated the mountainside.

Not all of the buildings are made of stone.

A bakery?

The bus stayed here long enough for me to walk around the town near the cafe and take some pictures. Here is a gallery of a few of them. Click on a picture to see a more detailed view.

Maybe you could find an airBNB here to enjoy the mountain air and the scent of pine trees and be less than 15 miles away from a Mediterranean Beach with a French and Italian blend of culture.

  1. Wow, that’s beautiful. And a combination of French and Italian cultures is fascinating. I loved all of the pictures, and now, I need to add Corsica to my bucket list. Thank you for the virtual tour, Doug. I really enjoyed that.

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
