Doors Open Ottawa 2018
Each year in the beginning of June the city of Ottawa hosts a “doors open” event to invite people into places and homes that they may not normally visit. Two examples are private homes that are unique or businesses that one may not visit very often.
The picture above shows two examples in the downtown area. The first, once the private home of a doctor and politician, is now the site of an award winning restaurant. Just past the restaurant is the first Baptist church of Ottawa. Both of these are part of this years program and volunteers are waiting inside to guide visitors around and explain the history of the building.
Since this is the first blog post on the 2018 Doors Open event, and the first stop we made on our day long excursion was the First Baptist Church, it seem like a great place to begin.
By coincidence, this was also the last photo I took that day. It is a respectable looking front door and the small stained glass window above the door looks much more impressive from inside.
The worship space is simple and conventional. Looking up at the ceiling, the craftsmanship is apparent. When you turn around to exit, the beauty of the stained glass windows and the bright organ pipes are a contrast to the simplicity of the altar.
A closer look at the stained glass is worth a few minutes.
The smaller window over the door is the oldest and was installed in 1878 when the church was built. here are a couple of photos of that masterpiece.
Today, I went to the farmers market. There were many pumpkins of a variety of sizes, colors, and shapes. They were pure delight. Later on, I baked a pumpkin bread. Tomorrow, I go to church. The church was built far more recently that that beautiful church depicted above. I know the man who made the stained glass windows.
The church that you photographed is spectacular. Thank you for the tour!
Thanks for the comment. I picked up the brochure from the church and it mentions many of the people involved in its construction and updates. Have you eaten in the restaurant, Beckta, behind the church?
