Plaza de España
Your visit to Seville, Spain is not complete without a visit to the Plaza de España. It is near the Universidad de Sevilla and other interesting sights in the old part of town. The next few pictures will give you an overview of this immense place.
How big is it you may ask. Well, it can be seen from space and it looks like this, thanks to Google Earth.
We entered through the building on the top right. The pictures were taken from the building, and could not show the great park that begins at the far end of the semicircular courtyard.
The park and buildings were completed in 1929 when Seville hosted a World Fair, the Ibero-American Exhibition. The building was designed with 48 alcoves with benches, one for each province of Spain. Spanish tourists often sit on the bench in the alcove of their home province and have their picture taken. This was way before the word “selfie” was used.
Wow! Doug, that looks and sounds grand and picturesque! Thank you for these fabulous photos and the additional information!
