Porto, Portugal
The second largest city in Portugal is an ancient city recorded back to 300 BCE. The old part on the hill is called the Riberia district and the city proper has a population of over one quarter million. The larger, metropolitan area has a population of 1.8 million. Since the city has been built along both sides of the Douro River, it is serviced by many bridges.
Driving into the city, one of the first bridges we saw was the newer railway bridge.
One of the most noticed bridges is the Dom Luis I bridge.
The city has many districts including beaches and the shipping areas. One of the most famous exports is a fortified wine called port.
Above is part of the modern city, the Avenida dos Aliados. Below is a view of the old city.
The city hall is an impressive building.
The Dom Luis I bridge was built by Eiffel using the same techniques as the French tower. The views from the bridge are captivating.
Most of the port production and storage is done on the Vila Nova Gaia side of the river because of the caves in the rock provide an ideal temperature.
Great Photos, Doug! I love the feel of the energy there, the architecture and what amazing bridges and waterways. Portugal has been added to my list (makes sense since Spain is on it)!! Roar!
Jyll post more soon. Maybe Jyll see you here on #blogboost again. I’ll match your Roar with my Blog on!
