Port Victoria, Mahé Island, Republic of Seychelles
We arrived at Port Victoria at dawn.
The Seychelle Islands are in line with Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Tanzania. It forms a triangle with Madagascar and Mauritius to its south. see the orange tag on the map below.
One of the iconic symbols of the city is a reminder of its British colonial history. From its earlier French history, the word for clock “horloge” became the name of this monument. It was originally cast out of iron then later painted silver. Its bells were not heard until the spring wound clock mechanism was replaced by an electric one in 1999.
In 1903 this clock tower was installed in the centre of Victoria, to mark the death in 1901 of Queen Victoria. It is a replica of Little Ben which is a replica of Big Ben. Little Ben is at the intersection of Vauxhall Bridge Road and Victoria Street, in Westminster, central London. Big Ben is in front of the Parliament Buildings at the other end of Victoria Street.
Only four months after it was erected, on August 13, Seychelles – a group of 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean – was separated from Mauritius to be governed as an independent crown colony.
Seychelles was first colonized by the French in the early 1500s and administered from Mauritius. Under a clever man named Quincey, the Seychelles negotiated a capitulation agreement with the British which helped protect them through the French English war. Seychelles did not become a British Crown Colony in its own right until 1903. The link at the end describes an unusual and interesting history of the Islands.
The Bicentennial Monument was erected in 1978 to commemorate the 200 years of Victoria. It is three fishtails representing marine life and heritage from the three cultures of Africa, Asia, and Europe. (Sometimes described as wings rather than tails.)
The Liberty Monument was unveiled in June 2014 to celebrate 38 years of freedom from British rule and encourage unity.
Seychelles is a really interesting place as far as the topography and how the locals live. Your travels are very varied to say the least and extremely interesting. You are doing a great presentation in your choice of subject matter and your photography.
