Sunny Sundays in Spain

How would you spend a sunny Sunday in Spain on the Mediterranean coast. Here are some thoughts if you are in Alicante, Spain. You might go to one of the many churches in the city or just find your favourite spot to soak up some sun. The Basilica de Santa Maria in the plaza de Santa Maria would be a good start. It has some exquisite carvings and statues that you can view in full detail.

If you are walking in this part of town you may be able to see the face in the hill below Castillo de Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara really is watching over the city of Alicante.

If you prefer a simpler place of worship, perhaps the co-cathedral of San Nicolas.

This simple sundial is basically a spike in the side of the church with some markings for the hours and a shadow from the sun. An ancient solution before mechanical clocks required clock towers.

For lunch, maybe a walk by the shops of the promenade. On the way there, you might notice these buildings.

The promenade is in front of the building above. If you have ever walked on a pattern like this, it is unforgettable even if, or maybe because it is a little dizzying. It really is flat in spite of its wavy appearance. It is a popular place for dog walking.

The satellite map below, thanks to google maps, shows the walkway in the lower left and in the top right, a reminder that Alicante has been the starting point for the round the world ocean race for five times. The latest in 2023. On August 10, 2025, the next leg of the race will start in Germany and finish in Montenegro.

That is all for now on Alicante, Spain.

  1. Oh, that’s absolutely wonderful! I loved all of the detail on those churches. That must have been a lot of work and it must have taken years. The detail is exquisite. But I have to say that the promenade was my favorite thing. That’s just gorgeous and then, there are the palm trees. Really beautiful. What a great place to take a walk!

  2. WOW I love them all but if I had to choose one, it would be the Basilica de Santa Maria. I love visiting old churches, the designs are breathtaking.

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
