Toledo Cathedral, Gold, Iron and Stained glass
In addition to the carved stone and glorious paintings, this cathedral has an abundance of gold, and stained glass in the available windows. Since Toledo is know for its fine steel work, it seems fitting that much of the gold is behind iron bars. These iron “fences” are called rejas when placed between the altar and the congregation. They are designed to allow the congregation to see what is happening in the altar space and to remind the congregation of the “sacred” (set apart) space.
The iron work is usually very detailed and plated with gold and silver. This cathedral has used rejas around the choir space and other smaller chapels.
Fortunately the small lens on the phone camera allows great pictures of the altar space beyond the rejas.
Sculptures are everywhere, on the walls and in the chapels. Here are some of the more prominent ones.
