When I talk about the Mediterranean Sea, I usually do not think of it as being made up of many other seas, more than the seven seas. Wikipedia includes “the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the Aegean Sea (including the so called Thracian Sea and Sea of Crete), the Adriatic Sea, the Alboran Sea, the Ligurian Sea, the Balearic Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ionian Sea, and the Sea of Marmara”. This vacation explores the Tyrrhenian Sea on the east side of Italy, down to Tunisia, back up to Monaco and France, then down the coast of Spain through the Balearic and Alboran seas. But that is not all, the last week we leave the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar and sail out into the Atlantic to spend a few days in the Canary Islands before returning to Morocco and finally finishing in Lisbon Portugal. Look at the western (left) half of the map below.
Our first port of call after Rome was Sorrento. While we were dining, going to the theatre and sleeping, we were sailing through the night. At dawn, we were anchored in the Gulf of Naples, looking at a beautiful sunrise.
The signs were in the sky that we were in the right place.
There was a lot more water travel that day, from the ship to the shore by ship’s tender, then a ferry to the Isle of Capri, then the same in reverse to get back to the ship.
The Oceania Marina ship waited in the bay while we enjoyed the day.
While we waited for the ferry to take us to Capri, I had time to take some pictures and video clips of the harbour.
After spending the morning in Capri, we returned to Sorrento by ferry and to the ship by the tender. Here is the video from the ferry as we approach Sorrento.
Don’t just sit on the bench waiting for your ship to come in, you might have to go out to meet it.
The Gulf of Naples sunrise is breathtaking! The photos draw you right into the journey—especially the harbor views. Makes me want to pack my bags and explore this region!
Thanks Jasmine. That is exactly what I try to do with my posts. Mission accomplished. 😊
Such breathtaking footage, thank you for sharing!
Love the blue sky since we’ve been suffering from gray and foggy days around here.
I have a Facebook friend who lives in Sorrento. She told me they experienced significant flooding in October 2024 due to severe storms and flash floods that affected various parts of the country. The heavy rainfall transformed streets into torrents, causing disruptions and damage in the region.
The weather was warmer than usual for that time of year and we only had rain the last day when we were in Lisbon. We were traveling the week after the floods and heard talk of it several times.
While all your photos are beautiful, I love the sky pictures especially the Gulf of Naples. Rich and I took a tour to Italy in the early 2000’s and we always planned to go again. Our church has a 12 day land tour to Italy coming up in December, I’m working on seeing if I can handle it by myself.
Hi Martha I hope you can take the trip either alone or sharing the room expenses with someone else.
I would be happy to be your roommate, Martha!!!
Oh wow, how beautiful. Italy is definitely on my bucket list!!! I would love to go there. I have a friend who has visited Italy twice in very recent years to paint. She is invited to go to various homes as a guest artist and she spends an entire month making paintings every day!
That sounds like great a way to see the world and exercise your passion. It beats a few hour visit.
Sadly I have never been to Italy, and doubt I will ever get there. It has been on my bucket list as many years ago I attended classes to learn Italian as I was working for a doctor who had many Italian patients. He had done some training in Rome, and spoke the language fluently. I love your wonderful photos. Great post. Thank you.
You. Can pick a place in Italy that you would like to visit, look it up on Google maps then switch to street view and explore the surrounding streets.
