Athens

The next stop on our trip was supposed to have been Santorini. The weather was bad and things were closing down in Santorini so our captain took us to Piraeus. That is the port for the city of Athens.

Since we left the last post talking about the Olympics, let’s start this one with the Olympics. Although Greece is the home of the Olympics, Athens has only hosted the games twice, 1896 and 2004. My previous post showed you the condition of the track field in Olympia, so it makes sense that a new stadium would be built for the 2004 games.

  1. Beautiful photographs! It was nice to see the difference between the ancient Olympic track and the modern one! I think that I would want to run on the ancient track! The modern track seems to lack… nature!!!

    1. I wonder if the modern tracks are cushioned. Running on concrete or asphalt can be hard on the knees. You can accommodate a lot more spectators in the new stadium.

  2. I agree with both her comments above.I don’t enjoy watching concrete scenery and running on unbuffered surfaces can be brutal for our joints.Loved the pictures

  3. Our daughter has modeled in Athens. She and my husband were both impressed with the down to earth cafe culture and amazing cappuccino. The Greek isles are stunning. Thank you for sharing this post. Good memories.

    1. Hi Martha. Who knows when Tokyo will welcome the next Summer Games?
I wonder how it will affect the schedule for future games.

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
