A quick look at the streets of Barcelona
Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain and a very popular tourist destination. There is a lot to see within the city and more in the surrounding countryside. Many in the city feel the pressure of 32 million tourists a year in a city of 1.6 million regular residents. Barcelona is in the Catalan region of Spain and Catalan is the language taught in schools. There is a political struggle to retain their distinct status within Spain.
In addition to the other tourist attractions, some people are attracted to the city to see the sporting events. The largest stadium in Europe, Camp Nou, is owned by FC Barcelona and holds over 99,000 spectators. Another stadium, built for the 1992 Olympics, seats almost 56,000.
City government is restricting permits on more hotels and holiday rental apartments. They are also watching the activity of
Gaudy is the city’s most famous architect. His style is to imitate nature by avoiding straight lines. His style can be seen in this building called Casa Milà.
