Cathedral of Monaco

This church is recognized by many names. It replaces the former 1252 Cathedral of Saint Nicholas which was demolished in 1874 to begin the building in 1875 of this church. Building was completed in 1903 and consecrated on June 11, 1911.

As the sun was setting, the side of the cathedral took on a wonderful glow.

Entering the cathedral front door, there is a long isle through the worship space (the Nave) to the altar at the front.

As you walk closer, the altar can be seen in the centre.

Within the cathedral there is a national shrine where Royal members of the Grimaldi family are buried. Most recently Prince Rainier III and his wife Princess Grace. Prince Rainier III married Patricia Grace Kelly in this cathedral in 1956.

Like many catholic churches there are many side chapels with their own alter and statue of a saint.

Outside, beside the church, is an interesting round building. It is the Courthouse or Palace of Justice for Monaco which has its own system of law.

Now for a quick video summary.

  1. Doug, I am dumbstruck by the detail included in the design of every niche, every square foot, and the care taken to make the view of the building on the outside quite grand. Close or at some distance, the view is completely impressive. I was surprised to read that Monaco has the Archdiocese of Monaco, despite being a small country. Thanks for sharing your gorgeous images.

  2. It’s beautiful, Doug! And so are all the other buildings in that neighborhood. How exciting that you were able to be there in person, to see the place where they got married.

  3. Beautiful, some really great shots here Doug. Believe it or now, I’ve visited Monaco on a work trip years ago but didn’t get a chance to see much… so thank you!
