Eagles and Owls at the Toronto Zoo

There are many different types of birds that are called raptors meaning birds of pray. Two of those are the owl and the eagle. Among each of these there are many types. The most easily identified eagle is the Bald Eagle but this post highlights the Steller Sea Eagle.

Steller Sea Eagle

The unique characters of this bird are its size, weighing up to twenty pounds and soaring on an eight foot wing span. The bright yellow feet and yellow bill along with the white tail and shoulders are very noticeable.

The film below will show him going for a walk around his pen in the Toronto Zoo. In nature, you are like to find them fishing on the Pacific coast.

Another patient hunter is the great horned owl. Sitting patiently, listening and watching for the movement of small prey. They usually hunt in the evening. Did you know that the owl’s eyes are fixed in the head, they do not move up or down or side to side. I also noticed in this video that the owl closed his eyes when he moves his head. Probably so he doesn’t get dizzy.

Just to brighten up the post I have included some Parrots. They may have an early start on the Halloween treats.

  1. What gorgeous photos, Doug!
Seeing the eagle walking reminds me of camping in Eastern Oregon in the early 70s, and noticed an eagle. We stopped the car to watch him, and he quickly flew to the ground, then walked from tree to tree in ‘stealth’ mode!
I love watching any of the raptors – and was fascinated with an owl that visited our ~ 4th grade class.

  2. I did not know that the owl’s eyes are fixed in their heads. That’s wild. Where we live I am watching falcons and vultures (not sure if I translated that correctly) and I’m fascinated by them.
