Fort York is located in the center of the city near the lake. It is a preservation of a British fort built in the early nineteenth century to defend the Toronto harbour. At that time Britain was withdrawing soldiers from the American colonies and consolidating other garrisons. Wikipedia has a quick description of Fort York.
Today it is not on the shore of Lake Ontario because of building on reclaimed land and the building of an expressway across the city between the fort and the reclaimed land.
The most infamous part of its history involves the war of 1812 and the Battle of York.
We visited the fort in the late afternoon shortly before they were closing. There were only a few other families visiting at that time. Fortunately, that is the time they take down the flag. That means the historic reenactors hired by the site parade out and perform the flag lowering ceremony.
The flag ceremony takes place at the south end of the parade grounds, almost under the expressway. Notice the reconstructed ramparts and the apartment towers on the reclaimed land.
Would you like an apartment here with the lake at the front and the park at the back and the noise of the expressway? There is less noise when the traffic is backed up during rush hours and moving slower.
Ok, first breathtaking photographs! The uniforms reminded me immediately of photos of American Foxhound group hunts with the riders on their horses surrounded by hundreds of foxhounds. If you google Smithtown Hunting Club. The club today is mostly about showmanship- no guns used, no animals hurt, etc. My hounds came from this club to my “local” shelter to me….https://smithtownhunt.com……check out the bright red jackets they wear!
Hi Pamela. Thanks for the link. I noticed the fife and drum corp that each actor had a different uniform.
I want to go. Thanks so much for sharing your photos.
Are you interested in the history or just need to take trip somewhere, anywhere? 😉
I’ve only seen the Fort while speeding along the expressway. Maybe, one day, I’ll drop in.
Thanks for the history refresher course! Your photos are stunning and looks like a great place to visit. I’m glad I went along with you!
Beautiful photograph. I would love to visit that fort. An apartment near it would be sweet. Lots of opportunity for painting. An old fort, the changing of the guard, and a beautiful lake. I am fascinated by history so that does work well for me.
Well, maybe not so close to the expressway. I would never sleep and would soon turn into a Zombie!!!! (what an image!!!) 🙂
