The Island Princess only stayed in Frederica from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The excursion I chose was a walking tour from 9:15 until 12:15 so I was back on the ship for lunch. In that short time, I logged more steps than anywhere else on the trip. With a great guide, I learned a lot and saw so much that it has taken me a week to show you most of it.
A lot of the walking was along well-planned trails with beautiful views. At one point it was like a goat trail up the side of the rampart to see the canons at the top of the hill.
One of the sights along the trail is this old White Water Tower. It was used from 1909 until 1994 as a water supply for the town. The platform on top is over 140 feet above sea level so it is a great place to look over the town and the neighbouring island. The inside has been painted with a water information mural by Soren Hausgaard Kjaer.
Play the following video to walk with me along a short part of the trail. Notice the pace and how I kept falling behind when I stopped to take a picture. At the end, we walk over the top of one of the few gateways through the rampart. From there we went down into the town to have a better look at the portals.
Back down at the level of the town, we were able to see the gates for vehicles and another for pedestrian traffic.
So now you have had a detailed look at historic Frederica, Denmark. I had to make my way back to the ship for lunch and a rest. Before the ship left the dock, another band came to play music for us as we left. Looks like the mayor turned up with his staff of office to officially show his appreciation. The last shuttle brought stragglers back and left empty.
What a beautiful tour! I’m so glad I walked it with you, so much to see. I love the band playing a farewell song to your group. What memories!
I was checking the photos last night to make sure that they were different bands in the morning and in the evening, They sounded different too.
Thanks for taking us along on this trip with you, Doug! I too, am often the one falling behind because I stop to take photos. How fun that a band and the mayor came out to send you all off!
The best pictures are taken when everyone else gets out of the way unless you are the one getting in the way.
How lucky you are! I especially love the picture taken through the gate. I’m going to have to go back and look at all of your posts from this trip!
Hi Diane, The trip is just beginning.
I think it was yesterday that I commented and asked how many days you were in Fredericia – and now I see you were only out and about for 3 hours! WOW! I can see why you logged more steps than anywhere else on the trip!
I await the next post to see where you will be reporting!
Thanks for sharing.
Hi Paul, The next port is Kristiansand in Norway and a visit to a quaint town called Lillesand, a popular summer vacation destination.
