Marigot, Saint Martin
Marigot is the capital city of Saint Martin which is part of a commune of France. Interestingly, France only controls about sixty percent of the island. The southern forty percent is controlled by the Netherlands. And you probably thought France and the Netherlands did not share a border. Well, here they do. Not to be confused with the French Saint Martin, the Dutch named their land Sint Maarten.
The population of Saint Martin is about 34,000, give or take 2,000 depending on who and when they take the count. In 2007 Saint Martin received independence from Guadeloupe.
Judging by the number of boats in the harbour, I think this must be a sailor’s paradise.
Out on the water, the early morning sun creates great lighting for beautiful pictures. Meanwhile, back on the land, the city is still in the shadow of the mountains so the colours are not as brilliant. I am calling them mountains but they are under the 2000 foot (610 metres) requirement to be a mountain. The highest point is about 425 metres, a little short of the mark.
As the sun rises, the light reaches the taller buildings and makes them stand out against the dry land.
Welcome to Marigot, Saint Martin. Do you still remember your French from Guadeloupe?
On a dreary winter’s night, it’s wonderful to look at these pictures. It gives me a chance to dream and imagine that I too am enjoying tropical breezes and lovely seascapes. I can see myself painting in such a place.
I have some more pictures from here to finish out the challenge. Stand by.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I love how you weave in a little bit of history.
I noticed how they subtly changed the French flag to their own.
