Monaco Oceanographic Institute

Prince Albert I of Monaco created the Oceanographic Institute in 1906 to create group of oceanographers to study the Mediterranean. The group is now called the Mediterranean Science Commission. The museum began in 1910 and has continued support from the Monarch of Monaco. Jaques-Yves Cousteau was the director between 1957 and 1988.

The Institute has a web page, a Facebook page, a Twitter account and can be seen on Instagram @oceanomonaco.

There is so much happening in this building. It is a shame our tour did not include time to explore inside. Everyone talks about their bucket list and adding things to it, seldom do I hear about people taking things off of their list or actually doing something that is on their list. This Museum may be my excuse to make another visit to Monaco.

Did you notice the little yellow thing in the bottom left corner of the picture above. It is very interesting and worth a closer look.

Built in 1966, it is a two person submarine, powered by a three and a half horsepower motor and can move at two knots per hour. Can you imagine Jacques Cousteau and you exploring the ocean at 300 feet below the surface?

Next to the museum is the beautiful garden of Saint Martin which has a statue of Princess Grace.

See if you can find this feature in the video at the end of the post.

The sea gull was sleeping with his head tucked under his wing but I woke him up as I approached.

One last look as the sun sets on a day well spent. This is the building that I mentioned in an earlier post I saw in the early morning but was not able to photograph when we were sailing into port. (link to post is at the end of this post.)

All of the places I stopped to take pictures with my cell phone are on the map where the red flags show how many pictures I took at each spot. Thanks to Adobe Lightroom and Google Earth.

Zooming in below, the museum is on the right and the Prince’s Palace in in the top left and the garden is in the bottom central.

Watch the video for a quick summary of this post.

  1. That’s the Yellow Submarine!!! It makes me want to sing, “We all live in a yellow submarine.” My dad used to love that song. Anyway, I love the pictures, and I need to add Monaco to my bucket list!

  2. I liked seeing the Yellow Submarine and showing it to my family. Pretty area I wish I was there to walk today.
