My first visit to Venice was in April of 2012. It was the beginning of a cruise on the Costa Fortuna. Nancy and I had spent the previous week in England on a road trip with my daughter and her boyfriend. This leg of our journey started with a flight from London Heathrow to Marco Polo airport in Venice. From there a waterbus took us to the famous San Marco Island. It was almost 6:00 PM and at dusk and overcast, the pictures show a gloomy mood. But I was excited to be in Venice.
The Bell Tower in St. Mark’s Square is called the Campanile. “The current campanile is a reconstruction completed in 1912, the historical tower having collapsed in 1902. At 98.6 metres (323 ft) in height, it is the tallest structure in Venice and is colloquially termed “el paròn de casa” (the master of the house). It is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city”. <Wikipedia>
It was getting dark and the lights were coming on.
After a pizza for dinner and a good night’s sleep in the Hotel Colombina, we were out exploring Venice and back to the San Marco square.
Since I am from a place called Aurora, I could not resist taking a picture, or two, of this shop in the square.
Beautiful photos, Doug! I was hoping to go to Italy – particularly Venice – for my 50th birthday but then COVID – so maybe I’ll get there next summer.
Try to pick a summer when it is not flooded. Spring and fall may not be as busy or as hot.
Great pics. I did make a trip to Italy, however missed Venice. Maybe next time.
Watch for the next post to see more pictures and video.
Doug, I always enjoy your images! I have never been to Venice, so I especially enjoy learning about it through others’ images. Thank you!
Beautiful photographs, Doug! I would love to visit Venice. The idea of a city without any roads is wonderful in my opinion. I’m happy that you and Nancy had a good time there.
