Niagara River and Falls

A couple of weeks after returning from our vacation in Europe, a friend from England came to visit us in Canada. We took them to see Niagara Falls. Maybe you would like to see some pictures and videos from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

Sitting in the boat on the river, we are surrounded by the Niagara Escarpment. The great falls are the result of the Niagara River pouring over the edge of that escarpment.

From on top of the escarpment, there is a great view of the river and the two cruise tour companies operating on the river. Initially there was only one called “the Maid of the Mist”. It had docks on both sides of the river, one in Canada and one in the USA. Since 2013 Canada has operated its own tour under the name of Niagara City Cruises. The US still operates their cruise under the original Maid of the Mist name. They use their original Blue coloured ponchos while the Canadians are wearing Red Ponchos.

To experience the power of the falls, you have to get up close. The best way to do that is in a boat. You are going to get wet because the ponchos are just not enough when the mist blows in from the sides of the boat. I kept my camera dry until we turned and the mist was hitting me from behind.

Use the controls in the bottom right corner of the video player to adjust the video size and quality.

The “Falls”are made up of three different falls, the Bridal falls, the American falls and the Horseshoe falls. The American Falls look like this.

After disembarking the cruise, we stopped for lunch and a washroom break then, to get a better view of the Horseshoe Falls we walked along the top of the escarpment to where we could see the curve in the escarpment. They look like this.

Here is a one minute video of the Horseshoe falls.

After listening to all that running water, you may need one of these. Stand back before you flush, there is lot of water behind it.
