Songdo Beach, South Korea

If the sun is shining in early April in South Korea with a temperature slightly above 15 Celcius, it is a great time to visit the beach.

Songdo Beach in Busan, South Korea, is best known for the Cloud Trail Skywalk. It curves out from the beach and extends over the water of the bay to a small rocky island then farther out to an observation pad.

Here is a video looking over the beach and Songdo Bay. Turn up the volume, sit back for a minute and imagine a warm summer day. (full screen if you can)

A few interesting features have been added to the bay.

Are you ready to take a walk along the Cloud Trail?

You will have to be careful with your belongings, you would not want to drop your keys, cell phone or passport through the openings in the floor. They are there so you can drop your eyes for a glance at the water below.

Well, don’t just stand there, let’s start walking . . .

When the trail gets to the rocky island, the bridge changes a bit and you can step off at one point and walk amongst the statues that have been added there.

An alternate way to see the beautiful Songdo Bay and the city of Busan is via the Busan Air Cruise, a cable car ride where some of the gondolas have transparent glass floors.

Just past the end of the Cloud Trail is a lighthouse to mark the hazard to boats.

Did you notice the colourful pieces in the breakwater? Did you ever play a game called Jacks? The preformed concrete pieces used to make the breakwater remind me of the pieces used in the game of jacks.

Here is one more video of the bay and the city viewed from the Cloud Trail.

Ok, it is time to head back to the bus to get to our next interesting spot in this surprising dynamic city.

Did I mention that it is a busy port with a lineup to get in and out?

  1. Doug, as I’ve said before, WOW. When you first said “beach”, I was thinking, yes, a rock beach. So many Americans think of beaches as being sand, but that’s not always so, even in the US. Then I noticed the tastefully formed concrete “rocks” that prevent erosion and blend beautifully with the natural rock. Thanks for the great tour of Songdo Beach!

    1. This beach has it all. I have been to beaches with black sand, red sand, brown sand, white sand and even pink sand. What a wonderful world.

  2. WOW what a beach! I love the light house. I love that you take all of us on virtual tours of places many will never see. I have a question, do you ever go home? LOL

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
