An Olive Processing Plant

One of the reasons for our visit to this part of the country was to learn a little more about one of Spain’s exports. Spain is clearly the largest producer of Olive oil in the world. Here is a chart of the top ten producers.

In this facility it was clear that if you are not storing a large variety of blends, it is not necessary to have a large building. Here it is important to have access to electric power because this modern facility is all about pumps and pipes.

5.3 million tones requires a lot of trucks.

The olives are brought to the processing plant in large transport trucks and dumped onto the scale.

Sometimes a few of the olives escape.


More hoppers and conveyers. Look ma, no hands.

From there, conveyors move them into the plant. Along the way, regular samples are collected to determine the quality of the incoming crop. Weight allowances are calculated based on the percentage of leaves and stems.

Inside the plant, everything is automated to get the best out of the olives and separate the first and second pressings.

There is one problem with living in this beautiful rolling countryside. You have to create your own flat space to play football.

So, that was the end of the tour of the olive pressing plant. The village awaits us.
