Peniscola

Peniscola is officially one of Spains most beautiful towns.

On the trip up the coast from Valencia to Barcelona we made two wonderful stops. The first was about ten in the morning. As you can see it was a cloudless day and what could be better for a visit to the beach.

Unfortunately we only stayed a short time to get some coffee, walk along the town streets and along the beautiful beach, build a dream for coming back another time, and a few minutes to get rid of the coffee.

On the hilltop is the Church of  Santa Maria.

On top of the hill is the Templar Fort built around 1300. The bell tower is part of another building, a hermitage.

The fortress was built between 1294 to 1307. One hundred years later, Pope Luna came to Peniscola and took up residence here. In 1417 the Catholic Church had more than one Pope and quarrels in the holy family about Pope Luna refusing to relinquish the Papal Tiara resulted in him receiving the title of Antipope Benedict XIII. Maybe it is fitting that in 2015 Peniscola was chosen for filming part of the Game of Thrones series.

This sandcastle must have survived the night.

This is April. The beaches will be filled with tourists when summer arrives.
If you book early, you might get a balcony overlooking the beach.
