Katakolon

Katakolon is the number one tourist port in Greece. Many have not heard of this port, with a population of 600. So why is it so popular? It is only a thirty-minute drive from the ancient ruins of Olympia. I am sure you have heard of the Olympic games.

The Greek Countryside is beautiful

Spring has claimed the countryside as its own. The birds are singing happily and there is a great sense of peace and calm.

The building on this site began in earnest about 700 BC. Earthquakes in the third and sixth centuries damaged the structures and the city was abandoned in the seventh century AD.

Over the centuries, tsunamis caused the sea waters to wash over the city and cover it in alluvial deposits, <mud> up to 8 meters deep. At that time, there would have been very few stones stacked upon one another.

The site was rediscovered in 1766 but excavation did not begin until 1829.

Where stones are stacked today it has been done to give a better sense of how it might have looked.

But there is still a beauty in the nature that is reclaiming the land.

    1. Books and movies are the closest we have to time machines. And our memory and imagination do it pretty well too.

  1. Hi Doug, Great pictures you took of the Olympia ruins. I have not ventured outside of the USA as of yet, but Greece is definitely one of the first places I want to visit. I wonder when the world will open up? Thank you for sharing!

Sending lots of love and gratitude,
    Jaime
