Udo-jingu Shrine

Shinto shrines are very popular in Japan and are starting to show up in other parts of the world to allow connection to their beliefs. They are marked by the distinctively coloured Vermilion Torii Gate.

Ten Torii Gates between the spiritual sacred space and the secular world.

There are other buildings within the sacred space of the shrine.

The most visited shrine here is at the bottom of the cliff. Look for the Torii Gate. Behind that gate is a cave and the shrine is inside the cave.

Outside of the cave is the North Pacific Ocean.

Climbing back up to the buses at the top of the cliff is an opportunity to see some things that may have been missed on the way down.

Look carefully through the Torii Gate as you leave and you will see the cafe of the secular world welcoming you back.

Through the Torii Gate you pass from the sacred to the secular world.

Welcome back to the modern world, washrooms and coffee anyone?

Now we face the steps, they are secure but unevenly spaced and possibly slippery when wet.

There are some things you might not have seen on the way in.
