Udo-Jingu Shrine – getting there

Just a short drive from Aburatsu harbour, northward up the east coast of Japan, with the North Pacific Ocean on the right side, there are some lovely views from the bus.

The Shrine is at the orange tag
from the bus parking, lower left, to the shrine, upper right.

In the videos, you can hear our guide telling us about the shrine and giving us instructions on how to behave.

To get to the shrine by bus, we have to approach it from the top of the cliff.

There are beautiful views over the ocean from the cliff.

From the bus, we begin the walk down the hill and through a tunnel.

It echos a lot in here.

Then there are lots of steps.

Now we are on level ground and can enjoy the sounds of a stream and its resident frog. I didn’t see him but he was happy about something.

A little pond and a frog with a big voice

Finally, there is the entrance to the shrine.

There is a cave at the bottom of the cliff. There is an ancient legend of the cave and the father of Emperor Jinmu (711-585 BC), the first emperor of the archipelago and founder of the Japanese empire on February 11, 660 BC.  You can read about it at this link:

There is also a belief that wishes for fertility are granted here.
