Around Alhambra

Views on a stroll around Alhambra

There is a lot to see while walking around the Alhambra site. There is a great variety of buildings and the trees frame them artistically. It is described as a pearl set in Emeralds.

Two of the most recognizable buildings are close together. The first is the church, Saint Maria de la Alhambra.

The group is beside the church and in front of them is the Palacio de Carlos V.

The architecture of this palace is vastly different from the others, inside and out.

Some buildings have not been restored but are definitely in need of some loving care.

Some buildings are only seen in the distance.

Some entrances are not in use anymore and some have been bricked up over time.

Since this is a museum, it is not unusual to find plaques in memory of past events.

Some entrances have special significance.

From the tour inside, you will remember the fountains,

Every garden and courtyard need a fountain.

and the same fountain from the other end.

You will also remember the views from the main courtyards,

The busy Lion’s court and lion fountain.

And the not so busy courtyard of King Charles V.

When we left the tour we passed through the Wine Gate.

Like all well laid out museums, the gift shop is always at the exit. This is no exception. I mentioned this was the wine gate or in Spanish, “la puerta del vino”. The sign refers to a song by the French composer, Claude Debussy for “La Puerta del Vino”.

We were not the only ones seen hanging out around the gift shop. Do you think it has a different meaning for these locals?

And, how can we forget the gardens.
