Magnolia Tree

There is a magnolia tree in our yard. Like the forsythia bush, it shows off its beautiful flowers before it grows the leaves for the season. I have been watching it for the last couple of weeks and taking pictures so that I can give you some idea of how quickly it develops.

One week later we had an overnight spring snowstorm that covered the ground. By the time I got out to take a picture, the sun had melted most of the snow that it could see but there is still some in the shady places under the pine trees.

This afternoon I took a few more pictures to show that life goes on in all of its beauty.

Below is a picture from April 15 of the first flowers. The next post will have some more close ups.

Beautiful blossoms on April 15, 2021

There are many varieties of Magnolia trees. Some have white flowers and the shape of the leaves changes with each variety. However, since this one still has no leaves, that does not help identify which branch of the family this one belongs to. Some of the varieties have been created by crossing others. Each variety has a unique name. Not all varieties are hardy enough to thrive in the colder climate zones.

What kind of flowering trees do you have near you?

  1. That is one beautiful tree, Doug! When I walk my dog, I notice all the trees in my neighborhood. Fortunately, we have a lot of cherry blossom trees that are similar to this. These walks are always nicer this time of year than when it is cold and snowy where I live. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for looking at the pictures. Tell me what you liked, or didn't.
