First Church of Christ Scientist in Ottawa
Another church opening its doors in Ottawa is the First Church of Christ Scientist. The building exterior does not fit the concept of church, however, inside it is configured with pews and alter and organ like most churches.
The members of this church began meeting in 1899. By 1913 they had outgrown a couple of earlier venues and began construction of this unique building. It is one of only a few classic Italian designed structures in Ottawa.
There were two organ demonstrations organized for the day. Although we were not there for the demonstration times, we were entertained by some lovely music. As we were leaving we learned that the organ was being played by the pre-teen daughter of this mother. I understand they were just visiting like we were but the girl could not pass up the chance to practice some of her skills. I was impressed, and I expect the mother is proud of her daughter’s ability.
That is such an interesting building! Simple, yet very detailed. I’d love to visit this building, as well as the others in your virtual tour.
